8 Reasons Why New Zealand Should Be Your Next Family Holiday

From ice-capped mountains to glacial hot springs and rolling green pastures, New Zealand truly has something for everyone. Located a short three-hour flight from Australia’s east coast, New Zealand is the ideal destination for families looking for a convenient and affordable holiday somewhere new and exciting. Beaches, active volcanoes and snowy slopes are just a few of the natural wonders on offer.

But if the great outdoors are not your thing – there are plenty of inner city options too. Auckland is a thriving multicultural hub, while Wellington is the ideal city break with enough arts and café culture to keep the whole family entertained.

No matter your age, you’ll be spoiled for choice in New Zealand.

1. Go dolphin and whale watching in Kaikoura

Located on New Zealand’s South Island, Kaikoura is one of the only places in the world where you can easily see sperm whales. Recognised for its abundant wildlife and marine life encounters, Kaikoura is the ideal place to take the kids on a whale watching expedition.

2. Watch a Māori haka performance

Introduce your kids to a little bit of local culture with a cultural show to see the haka. The haka is considered a core part of New Zealand’s Māori culture, so whether you catch it on the rugby field or at a concert hall, it is certainly worthwhile.

3. Explore Queenstown

Experience everything from kids' rafting trips to paragliding, bungee jumping, zip lines, ice-skating and skiing - Queenstown has it all! Most activities are suitable for children over the age of 10 years old, but it is always worth checking beforehand to see if any age restrictions apply. For breath-taking views across Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu, take the Skyline Gondola. And don’t miss Fergberger for the best burger in the country!

4. Visit the Hobbiton in Matamata

Step into the lush pastures of the Shire and explore the Lord of the Rings filming locations. There is no shortage of tours offering the magic of Hobbiton, so do your research and investigate which tour would suit your family best. Whether it’s a movie set tour or an evening banquet tour, it’s a fun day out for the whole family to day enjoy.

5. Pay a visit to Hot Water Beach

Dig your own hot water pool on this beautiful beach, located only a short two-hour drive from Auckland. The warm currents are caused by an underground river of hot water flowing from the interior of the earth to the surface, so if you arrive with the low tide, you’ll be able to dig your own natural spa. The beach also boasts some great surf, cruisy cafés and art galleries, and is only a short 5-minute drive to another Coromandel highlight – Cathedral Cove.

6. Visit Zealandia

Visit the world’s first protected urban eco-sanctuary, with over 40 species of native birds, plus dozens of different reptiles, frogs and plants to see. Many of the animals at plants at Zealandia are highly endangered or even extinct in the wild. It’s a fun day out for the entire family to enjoy!

7. Experience Wanaka in all its glory

The crystal-clear waters of Lake Wanaka are perfect for the whole family to explore. Located on the South Island, Wanaka is the ideal place for the family to enjoy good food (and wine!), plenty of cycling and water activities. Plus, you can take the kids to Puzzling World to experience the world-famous 3D maze, illusion rooms and leaning tower.

8. Swim in Lake Tekapo

For all round family fun, wade through the picturesque waters of Lake Tekapo. Located three hours south of Christchurch, Lake Tekapo is a remarkable turquoise lake set against the striking backdrop of the mountainous Southern Alps. Swim by day and star-gaze by night – you won’t be disappointed.
