Dr Harry: Why I became a vet

You might be familiar with Dr Harry Cooper from watching him on Australian TV screens in ‘Harry’s Practice’ or ‘Better Homes and Gardens’, but do you know how Dr Harry became a veterinarian and Aussie TV personality? We sat down with him to find out.

 



When did you know you wanted to be a vet?

From the age of 12, if you asked me what I wanted to be? I wanted to be a vet. So I went to Uni and eventually went to work in Taree for a while. Then I went out on my own and was in practice in Annangrove for nearly 10 years. Loved it! Converted a double garage into a verterinary clinic. 

Then we went down to Tasmania and I retired. I thought 'Oh yeah, we'll have a little sheep farm and I'll practice a little veterinary science on the side'.

And then... along came television!

How did you make the transition to TV?

So, I took a proposal down to the local television network in Tasmania. They looked at me and he said “Harry, animals! Who would want to watch a show about animals?”. So a guy rings me from Sydney only a month or so later and says “Would you like to make a TV show?”. Six years of ‘Harry’s Practice’ which was the best ever! 

What's next for Dr Harry?

I love it, I couldn't do anything else! People say to me 'What about this TV, when are you going to retire?' - I haven't got the word in my dictionary, I don't know what that means. I just love it too much.
