What does pet insurance cover?

Welcoming a new pet into your home can be one of the most pivotal experiences of your life. From unconditional love to affection, there’s never a dull moment when you have a furry companion. But, there’s also a lot of effort that goes into keeping your pup or kitten healthy long-term.

If we think about pet ownership as a whole, there are some key responsibilities, these include - exercise, food, and shelter. Providing a comfortable living environment, an adequate diet and regular walks are all things that satisfy the basic needs of your fur baby, but, what if something happens unexpectedly that falls out of your financial control? That’s where pet insurance comes in.

Having pet insurance can help mitigate the costs of eligible vet bills if your furry friend becomes sick or injured. Let's look at different types of insurance policies and how to decide which one suits you and your pet's needs.

Does pet insurance cover this?

It’s the question on every owner’s mind if their pet is accidentally injured or falls sick - will my insurance cover this? The answer is: it depends on your policy terms and conditions.

There are a few categories that determine what your pet’s illness or injury falls under:

Term Definition  Example
Specified accidental injury

Physical harm or injury that occurs through an accident and is a consequence of a certain event

Snake bite, bone fracture, bite wound, or lacerations

Illness and specified illness

A sickness or disease which:

  • is not included under Specified Accidental Injury Cover; and
  • is independent of any exclusions and Pre-existing Condition.

For specified illness policies, cover is limited to a specific list of conditions shown in your policy. See: Indoor Cat

Cancer, ingestion of a foreign object, or gastrointestinal issues

Pre-existing condition

A pre-existing condition refers to any health condition (diagnosed or otherwise) that your pet has shown signs of before the purchase of a Pet Insurance policy (or during its applicable waiting period), meaning the condition may not be covered under the policy

Your pet cat is diagnosed with luxating patella during the waiting period of your policy. See our pre-existing conditions page for more details and examples.

Additional benefits

Additional benefits included in the benefit limit of your policy

Emergency boarding and essential euthanasia

Routine Care (Optional non-insurance benefits)

Dental Illness Cover (Optional benefit)

Gingivities and Abscesses

In most cases, specified accidental injuries and illnesses are covered under most policy types. The differentiating factor is the annual benefit limit.

For example, let’s say your Border Collie, Max is involved in a motor vehicle incident that requires him to need surgery. If you have Basic Cover, you’ll be able to claim up to $5,000 on eligible vet bills.# Comparatively, if you have Comprehensive Plus Cover, you’ll be able to claim up to $30,000.#
